Zulkifli Mohamad Al-Bakri says that Jakim and other ministries will first analyze the weaknesses that need to be fixed.

KUALA LUMPUR: The government is committed to addressing the problem of imported frozen meat with fake halal logos as soon as possible, including the possibility of establishing a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI).

The Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Minister Zulkifli Mohamad Al-Bakri said that discussions have started and will continue until the issue is resolved.

“We will discuss with Jakim (Malaysian Islamic Development Department), Halal Jakim and various ministries to see what are the weaknesses we need to correct.

“I promise that immediate action will be taken within Jakim’s standards and jurisdiction,” he told reporters after inspecting an imported frozen meat facility, Lucky Frozen Sdn Bhd, here today.

On the creation of the RCI, Zulkifli said that it should first be discussed.

“We need to do an in-depth study. But it won’t take long, two or three days or a week for us to see the response and information on the things that we can address right away, ”he said.

Last week, media reported that a meat cartel was believed to be involved in smuggling non-certified meat from China, Ukraine, Brazil and Argentina before repackaging them with fake halal labels at a warehouse in Senai, Johor.

Meanwhile, on the action taken against the CEO of TH Properties Sdn Bhd, Damanhuri Mahmod, for his alleged misconduct, Zulkifli said that he had held a meeting with the latter on the matter via video conference today, and gave him some advice.

“He has also shown me the letter of apology that he issued on December 25. I said I don’t want such language or words to be used, even if we are in extreme anger, we should follow what Prophet Muhammad taught us.

“He promised me (he would take the advice) and we want to focus on the development of TH Properties and other matters as much as possible to restore the stability, strength and integrity of Tabung Haji,” he said.

Recently, a video showing Damanhuri speaking rude words at a meeting believed to involve the real estate company’s administrative staff had gone viral.
