KUALA LUMPUR (Bernama): The government has committed to addressing the issue of imported frozen meat with fake halal logos as soon as possible, including considering the creation of a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI).

The Minister of the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Seri, Dr. Zulkifli Mohamad Al-Bakri, said that the discussions have started and will continue until the problem is resolved.

“We will discuss with Jakim (Malaysian Islamic Development Department), Halal Jakim and various ministries to see where are the weaknesses that we must correct.

“I promise that immediate action will be taken within Jakim’s standards and jurisdiction,” he told reporters after inspecting an imported frozen meat facility here on Monday (December 28).

On the creation of the RCI, Zulkifli had asked to be given time to discuss it first.

“We need to do an in-depth study. But it won’t take us long, two or three days or a week, to see the response and information on things that we can address right away,” he said.

Media reported that a meat cartel was believed to be involved in smuggling uncertified meat from China, Ukraine, Brazil and Argentina before repackaging it with fake halal labels at a warehouse in Senai, Johor. – Bernama
