Covid-19: 2 new imported cases registered in Kuching district

KUCHING (Dec 28): Sarawak today registered two new imported cases of Covid-19 in the district of Kuching, said the chairman of the State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC), Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas.

Speaking at the regular press conference for Covid-19 updates, Uggah, who is also a senior deputy minister, reported that the total number of positive cases in the state was now 1,110.

“One of the cases involves a local woman who returned from the Congo on a flight to Kuala Lumpur before arriving at Kuching International Airport (KIA) on December 25. The case is an accountant who has been working in a state company in the Congo. since February 2020.

“The case underwent a Covid-19 rT-PCR test in the Congo on December 21, before returning to Malaysia and was negative,” he said.

Uggah further explained that the case’s RTK antigen detection test upon arrival at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) was also not reactive for Covid-19.

“Upon arrival at KIA Sarawak on December 25, the case was placed in the quarantine center to undergo mandatory quarantine and Covid-19 screening. The case was examined on December 26 and the rT-PCR test was positive, ”he said.

This case shows no signs or symptoms of infection and has been referred to Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) for treatment while contact tracing is in full swing.

The second case involves an illegal immigrant who has been arrested by law enforcement officers as a result of public complaints in Bau district via Ops Benteng on December 25.

The case, along with six others, were detained for illegally entering the state and did not have legitimate travel documents.

He was brought in for Covid-19 screening at a government health clinic in Kuching on December 26, and the result was positive on December 28.

This case also shows no signs or symptoms of infection and has been referred to SGH for further treatment under the supervision of the Malaysian Immigration Department. Contact tracing is also underway.

Uggah also reported that there were no cases of recovery and discharge during the day.

“To date, 1,062 or 95.68 percent of all cases have been recovered and discharged.

“A total of 27 cases continue to be treated in the isolation rooms of the hospitals. Of that, 13 are at SGH, six at Miri Hospital, five at Bintulu Hospital and three at Sibu Hospital, ”he said.

Uggah also reported that there were four new persons under investigation (PUI) reported for the day.

This brings the cumulative PUI total to 11,104 to date.

The districts of Sibu, Kuching, Bintulu and Lawas remain as yellow zones, as five cases of local transmission were reported in the last 14 days, with Sibu (2), Kuching (1), Bintulu (1) and Lawas (1) . The other districts remain green.

In terms of people under surveillance (PUS), there were 497 people who checked into the quarantine centers designated for their mandatory quarantine on Monday. This brings the current total PUS to 3,838 people in 42 hotels and non-hotel quarantine centers across the state.

To date, those who have completed their quarantine period number 45,275.

With no reported deaths, the death toll in the state stands at 19 or 1.71 percent of all cases.
