Musk Delays Tesla Roadster – Model Y, Cybertruck First

It makes business sense, this. Tesla CEO Elon Musk has said the new Tesla Roadster will be positioned at the rear of the new model’s tail, behind the Model Y SUV and Cybertruck. He said this in a podcast interview with comedian Joe Rogan that was released yesterday, covered by Reuters.

When Rogan asked Musk when he could buy a Roadster, the Tesla boss replied that he couldn’t provide a date, but said other projects, such as an increase in production of the Model Y SUV (a crossover version of the smaller Model 3 that Model X) and the construction of a Gigafactory in Berlin, Germany were higher priorities.

Roadster is like a dessert. We have to get the meat, the potatoes, the vegetables and stuff, “said Musk, adding that Tesla should also launch the Cybertruck before working on the sports car.

To recap, the second-generation Tesla Roadster was announced in November 2017. Musk has said in the past that sales of the Roadster would begin after the release of a revised version of the Model S sedan, which was widely expected in late 2020. The Dessert will now be served much later.

The performance figures cited by Tesla were quite surprising. Powered by a 200 kWh battery, the four-wheel drive four-seater sports car is claimed to do 0-97 km / h (0-60 mph) in just 1.9 seconds, while 0-160 km / h (0 -100 mph) takes 4.2 seconds. Top speed exceeds 402 km / h (250 mph), while a quarter-mile sprint is dispatched in 8.8 seconds, faster than anything from Fast & Furious.

Not fast enough? Add some rocket boosters from the SpaceX option that “will improve acceleration, top speed, braking and cornering.” At the other end of the electrical spectrum, a full charge produces a range of more than 1,000 km. Of course, Tesla hasn’t tested those claims yet, and with this latest development, it should be a while longer before they have to.
