Police said the gunman had previously hijacked a pickup but ran out of fuel.

TAWAU: A man who committed two robberies with a 68cm long parang this morning was caught driving a hijacked motorcycle directly into the Tawau Police Station here to escape a chasing crowd.

Tawau District Police Chief Peter Umbuas said the 27-year-old suspect was taken into custody by police at 8.10am, 20 minutes after a man wielding a parang stole his Modenas motorcycle. GT at Jalan Tawau Lama here.

“The victim asked passersby for help in pursuing the suspect, but the suspect, who had hijacked his motorcycle, managed to evade them.

“The thief eventually ended up on the grounds of the Tawau Police Station and was detained by the police along with his parang,” he said in a statement here today.

Peter said the suspect had also previously robbed a man driving a Nissan Frontier, at Jalan Tanjung Batu Darat here, using the parang at 7am.

“The suspect then escaped with the victim’s vehicle towards Jalan Tawau Lama, but the vehicle ran out of fuel at the Jalan Tawau Lama roundabout.

“This forced the suspect to abandon the vehicle on the side of the road,” he said.

Peter said a remand order will be issued against the suspect at the Tawau Magistrates Court for further investigation.

It added that the suspect had been arrested four times since 2014 for drug abuse.
