Covid-19: 3 new cases registered in Sarawak on Christmas Day, all imported

KUCHING (December 25): Sarawak recorded three new positive cases of Covid-19, all imported, bringing the total number of infections in the state to 1,099 on Christmas Day.

The Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC), in its daily update statement, said that each new case was reported in Miri, Lundu and Kuching, respectively.

“Case 1,097 involves a Thai man who returned from a high-risk area, Kuala Lumpur, and tested positive for Covid-19. The case arrived in Sarawak on December 21 through Miri Airport and was ordered to quarantine at Miri Quarantine Center, ”said SDMC.

He said the case underwent rT-PCR testing at a private health facility in Kuala Lumpur on December 19 and the result was negative.

On December 23, the case underwent rT-PCR testing in Miri and tested positive for the virus.

The case was asymptomatic and has been referred to Miri Hospital for medical attention.

According to SDMC, Case 1,098 involved an Indonesian worker from Kalimantan who had been arrested by law enforcement authorities for illegally entering the state.

He was arrested by authorities while trying to enter Sarawak via an illegal route along the Malaysian-Indonesian border in Lundu on December 23.

“The case underwent the Covid-19 smear test on December 24 and tested positive. The case is asymptomatic and has been referred to the Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) for medical attention ”.

SDMC said the 1,099 case involved a Bangladeshi man who tested positive for Covid-19 after returning from Kuala Lumpur.

The case entered the state on December 24 through Kuching International Airport and was ordered to self-quarantine at the quarantine center in Kuching.

“The case underwent the rT-PCR test on December 24 and the result was positive. The case is asymptomatic and has been admitted to SGH for medical attention ”.

SDMC said contact tracing for these new cases is being actively carried out.

Sarawak currently has no new recoveries or discharges, and the total of those cases was unchanged at 1,061 or 96.54 percent of the total cases.

SDMC said that a total of 19 people are still receiving treatment at three Sarawak hospitals.

Of the total, 11 are being treated at SGH, followed by five cases at Miri Hospital and three cases at Sibu Hospital.

“Four cases of persons under investigation (PUI) have been reported, two of which are still awaiting the results of laboratory tests,” said SDMC.

SDMC said that Sibu and Kuching are still categorized as yellow zones, as Sibu reported two new local infections and Kuching reported one local transmission in the past 14 days.
