BATU GAJAH: Some 2,695 affordable homeowners from Rumah Mesra Rakyat in Perak have defaulted on their loans amounting to RM3.5 thousand.

The director of Perak Syarikat Perumahan Negara Berhad (SPNB), Tajul Safuan Abu Hasan, said that many of them have not repaid their loans for the past three years.

“Of the 2,695 homeowners, only 30% of them are financially affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.

“We also understand that most of them are rubber pullers and may have difficulty making payments,” he told reporters after presenting the keys to 73 new owners at Metro Pengkalan here on Friday (December 25).

“The delay is affecting us and we cannot build more for others,” he said, adding that the monthly payment ranges from RM150 to RM300.

“We will visit the respective owners to educate them and find a solution,” he said.

“Legal action will be our last resort and we hope we don’t have to,” he added.

Tajul Safuan said that affordable housing is being built for those with a household income of less than RM5,000 for this year.

“The cost of a house is RM75,000 and the state government is subsidizing RM20,000 per house.

“Last year, only those with a family income of RM3,000 were able to apply for the house, which cost around RM65,000,” he said.

“They told us that the price for next year will be the same (as this year),” he said.
