Tengku Razaleigh says that when Umno leaders joined the cabinet, it was only to stabilize the situation during the political crisis.

KAJANG: Umno veteran Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah has issued his harshest criticism yet to party chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, saying he is “embarrassed” by the decision to join a presidential council made up of members of the Perikatan coalition. Nasional (PN).

This is because he said that Barisan Nasional (BN) was not a member of PN.

“I am ashamed or very strange that he (Zahid) has agreed to be on the presidential council because Umno is not a member of the PN,” he told reporters after a forum here.

He also asked Zahid “Where does Umno come in? Umno doesn’t go in at all. “

He said that when Umno allowed some of his selected members to be ministers in Muhyiddin Yassin’s cabinet, the move was to stabilize the political crisis facing the country earlier this year.

“That’s it. And we think that after the stability of the political scene, Umno (inaudible) should retire from the Cabinet.

“That was the idea. Not be there forever, ”he said.

A week ago, the governing parties, which include components of PN, BN and Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS), agreed to form a presidential council.

The council is made up of the leaders of each party.

The decision to establish the presidential council was agreed upon by party leaders, including PPBM Prime Minister and Chairman Muhyiddin, Umno Chairman Zahid, and PAS Chairman Abdul Hadi Awang, among others.

Ku Li: We have an illegitimate government

When asked about GE15, he said that due to Covid-19, the elections should be delayed.

However, he said, the only way forward was to have a motion of confidence in the Dewan Rakyat.

“Ask the Speaker to allow a motion of confidence,” he said, adding that people can see if Muhyiddin has the support.

When asked if he would take a break from politics, he said that will depend on his party.

Razaleigh, commonly known as Ku Li, said that the current government was illegitimate and that is why he refused to vote for the government’s budget for 2021.

“It makes no sense to vote for the budget as it is an illegitimate government,” he said.

At the forum organized by the National Council of Teachers, Ku Li was also asked about the reasons why Umno has become weak.

He said members should sacrifice for the party and not serve their own interests.

“But now, it involves vested interests and there are elite groups. Other problems (involving rakyat) are not examined, ”he said.

Ku Li said that the rakyat no longer felt part of Umno as the party is seen as one for the elitist group. So, he said, the party needed to involve more young people.
