KUALA LUMPUR: There were Christmas cheers for Masters world champion swimmer Cindy Ong as swimwear maker Speedo renewed its sponsorship commitments to her.

Cindy will wear the latest Fastskin swimsuit worn by American world champion Caeleb Dressel and Singapore Olympic gold medalist Joseph Schooling when participating in future competitions.

Speedo, who also entered national long-distance swimmer Jayden Tan, will also continue to provide cash incentives if Cindy steps onto the podium at the international competitions she attends.

2020 has not been a particularly busy year for Cindy due to the Covid-19 pandemic, but she is charting her plans to achieve an important career goal: to become the first ever swimming world record holder in Malaysia.

The former national butterfly swimmer, who competes in the 35-39-year-old female category, revealed yesterday that Russia’s Vladimir Morozov agreed to team up to bid for a new Masters mixed relay world record.

Swimmers of different nationalities are free to team up for the relay, as Masters swimming is club-based.

Morozov, 27, a bronze medalist at the London 2012 Olympics, is the current world record holder in the individual 100m medley (short course).

“There hadn’t been many competitions but I was lucky enough to swim at the Tokyo Masters where I won several gold medals and broke two records.

“I will prepare to defend my titles at the World Swimming Masters Championships, which have been delayed until 2022 in Japan due to the pandemic.

“Along the way, I will have to insert some encounters to gauge where I am. But, of course, the ultimate goal is to try and set a world record.

“I would like to have at least one world record before moving on to the next age category.

“Russian swimmer Vladimir agreed to swim with me and now we have to find out the other members of the team (each team will have two men and two women),” said Cindy, who also thanked Speedo for supporting her training needs.

Cindy, born in Ipoh and now the mother of three, made the nation proud by claiming five golds and two silvers at the World Masters Swimming Championships in Gwangju, South Korea, last year.
