KUALA LUMPUR: The Ministry of the Interior (KDN) through the National Registry Department (NRD) is reviewing the proposal on the implementation of the National Digital Identity (IDN), in line with current technological developments and needs.
Deputy Interior Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Mohamed Said said the government understands the problems often faced by customers who were required to present copies of their identity card for certain transactions, including when it comes to NRD.
“IDN is a verification platform that is expected to benefit and have a positive impact on individuals, the public and private sectors to meet the needs of identity verification when conducting digital transactions.
“However, this IDN initiative will not replace the use and function of MyKad. Instead, it will further improve the security mechanisms used in MyKad, ”he said in concluding the debate on the Supply Bill 2021 in Dewan Negara today.
In this regard, he said that online transactions are expected to be more secure and there will be less hassle for customers of having to provide copies of their MyKad, since electronic verification is based on biometric characteristics.
On proposals to change or improve the existing identity card to curb identity theft or falsification, Ismail said that the security features of the existing MyKad are of high quality using laser technology to allow details and photograph of the holder. of the identity card are printed and embedded in the plastic.
“If there is any modification or forgery, it can be easily and quickly detected. As such, the ministry is of the opinion that the security features of the existing MyKad are adequate and well protected against counterfeiting syndicates, ”he said. –Called
