Larry Sng took over as the PKR’s state leader after Baru Bian resigned, but now says the party needs a Dayak at the helm.

KUCHING: The resignation of Julau MP Larry Sng as president of the Sarawak PKR is a popular decision as the party prepares for state elections, according to two political analysts.

Jayum Jawan of Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) said the resignation will give PKR another chance to search for a capable Dayak leader to lead the battle for the party.

“If the party can appoint someone who is morally upright with good manners and known among the Dayak community, it can actually make the party even stronger, even in the coming months before Sarawak’s twelfth state election is held,” he said to FMT.

“PKR will have no impact on the Dayak areas if it continues to be led by a Chinese. Therefore, a good Dayak leader is critical for the party to penetrate further into the Dayak majority seats. “

Jayum Jawan.

Jayum said that Sng’s resignation was also not likely to create a significant negative impact on the party.

“In fact, it gives PKR the opportunity to be led by a better leader,” he added.

Sng was appointed chairman of the Sarawak PKR in March, replacing Selangau MP Baru Bian, who left the party in February following the country’s political crisis.

Sng said his decision to resign was made in the best interest of the Sarawak PKR, which should be led by a dayak leader before the state elections.

James Chin.

James Chin of the Asia Institute at the University of Tasmania also shared the sentiment that the party has a Dayak leader.

“What is most critical for PKR now is electing someone who can hold the party together and unite Dayak voters. Otherwise, the game will continue to be chaos, “he said.

“They need to appoint a new president as soon as possible, as the opposition parties in Sarawak are in the middle of negotiations on seats. They don’t have much time. “

Sarawak’s next state elections are due to be called for June 2021.
