249 people arrested for MCO-related offenses

Police and other law enforcement personnel have been conducting checks to ensure that people are following standard operating procedures to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

PETALING JAYA: The authorities arrested 249 people yesterday for crimes related to the movement control order.

Chief Security Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob said all but one received compound fines. The remaining person was referred.

The crimes included not wearing face masks, not registering or providing contact tracing materials, and not observing physical distancing.

A total of 2,777 compliance work teams, made up of some 12,000 officers, were deployed to carry out controls in supermarkets, restaurants, street vendors, factories, banks, government offices, as well as land, water and air transportation terminals.

Ismail also said authorities detained 46 foreigners and two smugglers under Ops Benteng. Eight vehicles were also seized.

He added that 88,827 people had come through the KLIA between July 24 and December 18 from various countries.

A total of 532 people tested positive and were sent to the hospital for treatment, while 79,938 were able to return home.

Some 8,357 people are currently in mandatory quarantine.
