Covid-19: 2 new cases in Sarawak today – 1 local transmission in Sibu, 1 imported case in Miri

KUCHING (Dec 19): Sarawak today recorded two new Covid-19 cases with one locally transmitted case in Sibu and one imported case in Miri, the State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) said in a statement.

With the two cases, the total number of positive cases in the state increased to 1,087.

Sibu’s case involves a retiree from Sarawak who underwent a Covid-19 screening test prior to surgery at Sibu Hospital. This case was examined on December 18 and found positive for Covid-19 on the same day.

The case showed no signs or symptoms and has been admitted to Sibu Hospital for further treatment. This case has no history of travel abroad or to the high-risk infection area in the past 14 days. Nor does he have any close contact with positive cases.

This case is under further investigation and contacts are being traced.

The imported case in Miri involves a teacher who underwent a Covid-19 test after returning from a high-risk area for infection, which was Selangor.

The case entered Sarawak through Miri Airport on December 15 and was directed to undergo a 14-day home quarantine as the case stands alone and there was no vacant spot in designated quarantine centers.

The case was tested for Covid-19 on December 17 and the result was positive. The case did not experience any signs or symptoms and has been admitted to Miri Hospital for further treatment. Contact tracing for this case is ongoing.

Meanwhile, SDMC revealed that today there were two cases of recoveries and discharges.

“To date, 1,052 or 96.78 percent of all cases have been recovered and discharged.

“A total of 16 cases continue to be treated in the isolation rooms of the hospitals. Of that, 11 are in Sarawak General Hospital (SGH), three in Sibu Hospital, one in Miri Hospital and one in Bintulu Hospital, ”he said.

There were three new persons under investigation (PUI) reported for the day, with one awaiting lab results, bringing the cumulative PUI total to 11,046 to date.

As for people under surveillance (PUS), there are 468 people who have checked into hotels for their mandatory quarantine today.

This brings the total current PUS to 3,944 people in 42 hotels and non-hotel quarantine centers across the state.

To date, those who have completed their quarantine period number 41,621.

With no reported deaths, the death toll in the state remains at 19 or 1.77 percent of all cases.

Sibu and Serian districts remain yellow zones with a total of three local transmission cases reported in the last 14 days, namely two in Sibu and one in Serian. The other 38 districts are green areas.
