KUANTAN: An elderly woman was separated for a total of RM61,500 with a man she met online after falling victim to a love scam.

Pahang Commercial CID Chief Mohd Wazir Mohd Yusof said the 73-year-old victim met the suspect on social media in April and this led to an online romantic relationship with the suspect.

“The victim claimed that at the end of November, the suspect asked him for a loan of RM 100,000 because he was facing financial problems and promised to return the money when his situation improved,” he told reporters today.

Relying on him, he made four transactions via a cash deposit machine, worth RM61,500, to the suspect. The last transaction was yesterday morning, he added.

Wazir said the victim only realized she had been misled after a call from her bank yesterday afternoon asking about large withdrawals from her account.

It said the victim filed a report at the Bentong Police Station and that the case was being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating, a crime that carries a maximum jail sentence of 10 years, spanking and a fine, if is found guilty.
