KUALA LUMPUR: A Nigerian man has been charged with killing his grandson, sexually assaulting his stepdaughter, assaulting his wife, attempted murder of their young son, and attempted suicide.
The charges were read to Ibekwe Emeka Augustine, 42, in her hospital bed in the presence of the Judge of the Court of Sessions, Emelia Kaswati Mohamad Khalid, and the Deputy Prosecutor Mohamad Sharizzat Amadan.
Augustine has been protected from injuries sustained after jumping from the third floor of the apartment.
Augustine was charged with the murder of his four-year-old stepson in a unit at Danau Villa Apartment in Setapak, here between 7.45am and 8.15am on November 29; the charge carries a mandatory death sentence upon conviction.
No guilty plea was recorded on this charge, as murder cases fall within the jurisdiction of the High Court.
He pleaded guilty to:
- Suicide attempt: the crime is punishable by a jail term of up to one year or a fine;
- Attempted murder of her seven-year-old son: punishable by a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a fine
- Voluntarily causing harm to his 48-year-old wife: punishable by imprisonment of no more than seven years and a fine.
Augustine pleaded not guilty to:
- Sexually assaulting his 25-year-old stepdaughter that day; the charge carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in jail and flogging upon conviction.
- Self-administration of marijuana extract THC and morphine; the charge carries a maximum sentence of two years in jail or a fine of up to RM 5,000 and police supervision for three years after conviction.
Bail was not allowed and the court set January 11 to re-mention two charges and also to sentence the four of which he had pleaded guilty.
