KUALA LUMPUR : Eight police officers were arrested in separate cases over the past three weeks for committing crimes, drug trafficking and misconduct.

Kuala Lumpur Police Chief Commissioner Datuk Saiful Azly Kamaruddin said today that two policemen were arrested on November 25 for allegedly extorting 1,000 RM from a motorist after accusing him of pimping foreign women.

In another case on December 7, three policemen, aged between 31 and 35, were arrested after extorting 10,000 ringgit from two men.

Saiful said the incident occurred after a brief chase between patrol cars and a car in Jalan Imbi.

He said that two of the four men in the car fled after the car stopped and the other two were briefly detained by police officers until paid.

Saiful said the case came to light after a video of the alleged crime was sent to the Dang Wangi police and the three patrol cars were immediately located and arrested.

In another case on Dec. 8, two police officers were among four suspects ages 29 to 48 who were arrested in a Brickfields hotel room for drug trafficking.

Saiful said that in addition to seizing various drugs from them, police also found a bag belonging to a civilian that contained a gun.

He said both policemen and civilians tested positive for drug abuse.

Saiful said the police also took action against another policeman who was absent from duty without official permission for 24 days in a row.

“We will not compromise and we will crack down on police personnel who are misguided and violate the law,” he said.
