José Mourinho believes that Liverpool have become the best team in England after taking a “perfect” approach with Jurgen Klopp.
The German, who was named in 2015, has planned a reform at Anfield that saw the Reds win the Champions League in 2019 and then clinch the Premier League title from last season.
Mourinho finds his Tottenham team heading to Merseyside on Wednesday ahead of Liverpool in the table after an impressive start to the season.
For his team to reach Liverpool’s level, Mourinho says it will take time.
“I think a team to achieve what Liverpool have already achieved and what they keep trying to achieve more, the job has to be perfect,” he said.
“It’s not just about the correct transfer window, a certain amount of money to spend, it’s about many things put together.
“I’ve been to clubs where we reach similar levels of success, so I know well what it takes to reach this kind of level.
“So one of the things they did very, very well in exactly the 1,894 days (of Klopp’s reign) that they were successful was that they had time. They had time.
“Jurgen arrived in the middle of the season, it was not easy. Then the second period of that second half of that season they were already improving. They knew what they wanted, they stuck together, they believed in each other, great transfer windows, great evolution of the players they had.
“It is time for Jurgen to establish the profile and principles of the game that will be the basis of the team’s development.
“Then at a later stage, a big investment in key objectives. (Virgil) Van Dijk at one crucial moment, Alisson at another. Everything they do, they do very, very well.
“I think it is very close to perfection to reach the level of results that they are achieving.”
Mourinho is not known for his longevity in the clubs, he often leaves in the third season, but he sees himself staying in North London for some time.
“The first club where I felt I needed time and they didn’t give me time was at Manchester United,” he said. “Because I felt like I left in the middle of the process, but I learned very early to respect decisions, which I did at United.
“We did what we did, we did what was possible and we kept going, and I am happy, they are happy and we have a great relationship which is something I am always very proud to say.
“When I leave the clubs, I have very good relations with everyone and United is one more example of that.
“Now at Tottenham, I know the profile of the job at hand and, hopefully, so far I am really enjoying being at the club.
“I think the club structure is also happy to work with me, so I see myself staying for a long time.
“But if we can speed up the process, as if we are speeding it up, and if we are doing good things as we are doing, then of course we are not going to waste time.”
That makes the Spurs trip to Anfield difficult enough, but it will get tougher as their hosts will have the backing of 2,000 fans.
Tottenham will no longer have that luxury in their home games, having had fans in the North London derby, with the capital entering level three restrictions.
Mourinho says that makes the competition unfair, but he doesn’t complain.
No complaints from Mourinho
He added: “I don’t think it should be selfish. If you ask me, is it fair to the competition? I don’t think it’s fair because, of course, the team that has fans at home has a different intensity, has a different temperature, a different environment and that, of course, is an advantage. .
“But I don’t think we can be selfish and say because London is in the third tier and Brighton is not, or Liverpool, Everton, they are not. I don’t think we should be selfish in saying, ‘I don’t have, you don’t have.
“I have not. You have. You’re lucky. And bad luck for us. But I’m not going to complain.
“Also, because like I said before, I am very confused about this situation. One level three day, another level two day, another 2000 day at Tottenham Stadium and it’s the same as Accrington Stadium.
“There are too many contradictions, too many things that I don’t understand and I don’t want to get involved in that.”
