“It’s a new norm in Dewan Rakyat!” said Transport Minister Datuk Seri, Dr. Wee Ka Siong, who posted a photo of the three on Facebook.

“All three had asked permission from the Director General of Health to attend the voting session in Parliament,” he added.

Upon seeing their presence, opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim requested an explanation from President Datuk Azhar Azizan Harun as to why the three were still allowed to enter the Chamber while under a home quarantine order.

Several opposition MPs also expressed concern that the presence of the three would pose a threat to the health of other lawmakers.

Azhar said all three MPs tested negative for Covid-19, adding that a lawmaker had also come to vote last Thursday and did not follow the quarantine order.

Dissatisfied with the Speaker ‘s response, the opposition bloc withdrew in protest.

Azhar proceeded with the block vote on the budget of the Federal Territories Ministry at the committee stage, which was approved with 110 in favor and seven against.

Separately, Prime Minister (Law) Department Minister Datuk Takiyuddin Hassan said that Health Director General Tan Sri Dr. Noor Hisham Abdullah had used his powers under Section 15 of Law 342 to provide authorization special so that the three deputies were present in the voting process.

“The opposition strike shows that they don’t understand or can no longer endure (the procedures),” he said.

Datuk Johari Abdul (PH-Sungai Petani), who is PKR’s whip, said that the opposition decided to withdraw as a show of protest against the double standards regarding those under the Covid-19 quarantine.

“How can this be when quarantined rakyats are subject to a different set of rules than that imposed on parliamentarians?” Johari said at a press conference.

Datuk Mahfuz Omar (PH-Pokok Sena), who is the whip of Parti Amanah Negara, said that the presence of the three MPs had exposed other MPs to the risk of infection.
