PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) arrested two more people in connection with an abuse of power scandal in the shipping industry.
They are a 50-year-old director of a government agency and a 60-year-old company director.
Judge Shah Wira Abdul Halim ordered that the director of the government agency be held in preventive custody for four days until December 18 and that the director of the company be in preventive detention for five days until December 19.
Both were arrested Monday night (December 14) after showing up at MACC headquarters here.
The MACC has already detained five other people in the case, including two senior government officials.
The two top government officials serve as deputy director general and division secretary, while the other three suspects are directors of shipping companies.
According to one source, senior officers had allegedly abused their position by issuing exemption letters to certain shipping companies, allowing them to transport high-grade oil in Malaysian waters.
This goes against a government decision that prohibits “single hull and double bottom” types of vessels from carrying heavy oil.
The exemption letters were allegedly sent to the companies without any ministerial knowledge or support.
The case is being investigated under Section 17 of the MACC Act.
