KUALA LUMPUR: Those who usually pass a red traffic light, beware. The traffic police today launched a special operation to bring these violators to book throughout the country.
Traffic investigations by federal police and compliance department director DCP Datuk Azisman Alias said motorists are ignoring traffic light rules and violations related to running red lights are on the rise.
He said motorcyclists, especially those from parcel or parcel services, appear to be the main culprits.
Azisman said statistics show that 69,267 citations were issued nationwide last year against motorists for running a red light.
He said that between January and November of this year 52,170 citations were issued for the same crime.
Azisman said motorcyclists topped the statistics as nearly 50% of citations were issued against them, followed by other categories of vehicles.
“We seriously consider this driving trend and attitude as it can cause accidents and is of concern to the public.
We want to remind all motorists to adhere to traffic laws and that those caught at a red light will receive citations on the spot or have their vehicle registration number recorded for further action. Violators can face a fine of up to RM2,000 or a prison sentence of up to six months under traffic laws, “he said today.
Azisman said an operation codenamed “Ops Lampu Isyarat Merah” was launched yesterday to act on the red lights.
He said that the operation that will take place until December 31 was also to educate and raise awareness among road users to comply with the traffic light regulations.
