TANGKAK: Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin (Photo) has advised farmers in Sengkang Batu 18 near Bukit Gambir to develop a comprehensive agritourism center.
The group’s plantation representative Tan Chee Kiong said they welcomed Muhyiddin, who is a Pagoh MP and Gambir assemblyman, on their farms and briefed the country’s leader on the area.
“This area is really suitable to be developed as an agrotourism destination, since we have a mushroom factory in Grisek, 202.34ha of padi and 242ha of lush orchards.
“The famous Gunung Ledang has a seaside resort and this area already has the potential to be developed as an agritourism destination,” he said when meeting after Muhyiddin’s visit on Sunday (December 13).
Tan said Muhyiddin advised them to create a unique center where visitors can experience how to become farmers.
“Visitors can harvest the vegetables and cook them, and we are also looking to prepare souvenirs like T-shirts and hats as souvenirs for them,” he added.
He said that under the group, there were 30 members who planted 16 types of vegetables and fruits, including papayas, bananas, and guavas.
Tan said farmers in the area can produce around 48,000 tonnes of leafy vegetables per year with a gross income of RM 50,000, excluding fruits and palm oil.
It added that they normally supplied their products to Melaka, other parts of Johor, Kuala Lumpur and Kuantan, while the remaining 10% would be exported to Singapore.
“About 80% of our supplies go directly to hypermarkets, with the rest going to wholesale markets,” he said.
