JAKARTA, Dec.12 (Bloomberg): Indonesia invited SpaceX to evaluate the possibility of establishing a rocket launch site in the country, according to a ministry statement on Saturday.

President Joko Widodo discussed the idea with SpaceX founder Elon Musk during a phone call on Friday night (December 11), the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime and Investment Affairs said in the statement.

Space X (Space Exploration Technologies Corp) is an American aerospace manufacturer and space transportation services company based in Hawthorne, California.

It was founded in 2002 by Musk with the goal of reducing space transportation costs to enable the colonization of Mars.

Musk intends to send a team to Indonesia in January to study partnership opportunities, he said.

Indonesia is already in talks with Musk about a possible investment in the country, and Tesla Inc. is studying the possibility of building a plant in Central Java, Industry Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita said in October.

Indonesia, home to some of the world’s largest copper, nickel and tin deposits, is touting its abundance of raw materials to attract billions of dollars in investment.
