KUALA LUMPUR (Bernama): The Ministry of Housing and Local Government only plans to beautify the site of the collapsed Highland Towers condominium and turn it into a historic site, says its minister Zuraida Kamaruddin (Photo).
She said the ministry did not plan to build a monument on the site as reported by the media.
“The plan to beautify the place is like a reminder of the tragic incident that killed 48 residents on December 11, 1993,” he said in a statement on Friday (December 11).
Zuraida said that the Highland Towers area needed a new life, as it had caused a feeling of unrest among the local community due to the social problems that occurred there.
He said demolishing the collapsed building, which had been abandoned for the past 27 years, and turning it into a historic site would also ensure the well-being of the area’s residents.
Media outlets had previously reported that the ministry planned to build a monument on the site of the collapsed Highland Towers condominium.
The Highland Towers tragedy shocked the entire country when Block 1 of the condo, located in Taman Hillview, Ulu Klang, collapsed at 1.35 pm on December 11, 1993. – Bernama
