PETALING JAYA: Umno will not hesitate to get rid of Perikatan Nasional (PN) and go alone in the next general election (GE15) or even link up with Pakatan Harapan (PH) if PPBM continues to overcome its weight to dominate the coalition, a senior leader said today of Umno.
Johor Umno Deputy Director Nur Jazlan Mohamed warned that the party would pay a heavy price if it stayed in the ruling coalition and allowed a “weak” PPBM to take the lead at the polls.
Nur Jazlan said there was “latent frustration” among Umno members against PPBM’s attempts to assert itself as a dominant force in the PN government.
He said that, by looking at the situation in question, the party rank and file should begin to think “broadly to understand” why the party should explore options such as cooperation with the parties that make up the PH, including the DAP.
He said it would be easier for Umno to navigate GE15 and win the most seats if he goes solo, as most of his rivals will be PPBM and PAS candidates, adding that the fight would be on the Malaysian seats, especially in the districts. suburban and rural.
He said a link between Umno and PKR, as well as DAP, “may not be a bad idea” as Malaysia needed a more racially representative government to move forward and achieve global recognition as a progressive nation.
“Having a government that is more than 90% Malaysian is neither healthy nor good for the country. We cannot leave out non-Malays when it comes to government positions, “he said, urging Umno members to give this” PH option “some thought.
Nur Jazlan said PN was doomed to lose the general election even before the nomination day due to the allocation of seats. He said it would be simply unacceptable for Umno to give up the seats it won in the last elections, let alone the ones it lost.
He also said it would be political suicide for Umno to allow PPBM, which he described as the PN’s weakest party, to position itself as the dominant force through a proposed grand coalition with Barisan Nasional, PAS and GPS as its partners.
“This is the first time that we have a situation where the Prime Minister’s Party (PPBM) controls only one state and that also Sabah, where Umno still has the largest number of seats.
“For the Umno grassroots, this is unfathomable,” Nur Jazlan told FMT.
He said PPBM leaders “could not even hold on to Johor and Perak states,” citing the change in leadership that brought mentoring posts back to Umno.
“Logic dictates that the strongest party in a coalition (must) be the dominant party, whether through elections or by deciding the positions of prime minister, menteris besar, or senior ministers. We need a restart at the federal and state level, ”he said.
Nur Jazlan also defended the concept of parties cooperating to form the government after an election and not before the vote takes place, adding that all parties should be able to contest as many seats as they want.
“The winning parties should form a coalition and let the party with the largest number of seats nominate their choice for the posts of prime minister, menteris besar or top ministers,” he said, adding that this could be a way to get the nation out of the current political mess.
He added that Malaysians should also stop asking coalitions or parties to nominate their candidate for prime minister, as they should have the freedom to choose the strongest among them after an election and not be dictated by pre-election promises.
Nur Jazlan said the days when a single party won 80 or 90 seats were long gone, adding that Malaysian politics have gone further.
