KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia’s unemployment rate rose 0.1 percentage points month-over-month to 4.7 percent in October 2020, the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) said today.

In a statement, Chief Statistician Datuk Seri Dr. Mohd Uzir Mahidin (pix) said that the workforce improved at a slower rate in October due to a rise in employed and unemployed people.

It said the number of unemployed increased 1.5 percent to 748,200 people compared to September 2020, while the employed also posted an upward trend for five consecutive months with marginal growth of 0.1 percent month-on-month to 15.21 million people.

As most states were submitted to the Conditional Motion Control Order (CMCO) effective October 14, 2020, industrial and commercial activities continued their operations in compliance with strict standard operating procedures.

Therefore, the labor market remained in a modest condition as translated by the indicator of the employment-population ratio that rose to 65.3 percent in October.

“Regarding the employment situation, during the month there was a greater number of categories of employees with an increase from 28,100 thousand people to 11.76 million people compared to the previous month.

“By contrast, the self-employed decreased by 0.3 percent to 2.43 million people compared to the previous month,” he said.

Meanwhile, the number of employed persons who were temporarily unemployed increased to 183,600 people compared to September 2020 (100,700 people) mainly due to the implementation of CMCO during the month.

For the record, the country recorded the highest number of people who were temporarily not working with a total of 5.9 million people during the MCO in April 2020.

This group of people, who were probably unable to work, were not classified as unemployed because they had jobs to return to.

“Looking at the current situation, with a growing number of new Covid-19 cases since October 2020, the job market will continue to face uncertainties.

However, with the CMCO lifting in phases as of December 7, this will partly lead to economic sectors regaining their momentum after increased demand, and subsequently encourage companies to retain or even increase job opportunities ”, He added. – Called
