PUTRAJAYA: Five people, including a deputy director general with the title of Datuk and a divisional secretary of a government department, have been detained for five days from today in connection with a bribery case related to the transportation of heavy oil in national waters.
The other detainees were three directors of shipping companies, including one with the title of Datuk Seri.
Judge Shah Wira Abdul Halim issued the remand order after hearing a request from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) in Putrajaya Magistrates Court here today.
According to sources close to the investigations, the five people, between 35 and 54 years old, were arrested when they showed up to give their statements at the MACC headquarters here last night.
The two senior government officials allegedly abused their position and power by issuing exemption letters to certain companies without the knowledge and approval of the Minister of Transportation.
The event also took place without the knowledge of the department’s director general, who had previously issued an order prohibiting the use of single-hull and double-bottom vessels to transport heavy oil in Malaysian waters, the sources said.
The case is being investigated under Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code and Section 17 of the MACC Act of 2009. -Called
