PETALING JAYA: The education ministry said today that elementary and middle school students can wear white or black shoes when they resume classes next year.

However, in a memorandum sent by the ministry’s director general dated yesterday, all unit heads and state directors of education were told that students must wear socks the same color as the shoes they choose to wear.

The ministry also stipulated that shoes must be made of canvas or other synthetic materials, such as nylon and polyester, which have permeability and air circulation, providing comfort, safety and health for students.

In 2018, former Education Minister Maszlee Malik sparked controversy when he said that the Education Ministry would allow students to wear black shoes and socks in schools from 2019 with full implementation of the policy from 2021.

Announcing the measure in July 2018, Maszlee said that many parents had complained that their children’s white school shoes get easily dirty.

The ministry said today’s statement also voids its 2018 circular that required students under the ministry to wear black shoes.
