Nurul Hidayah Ahmad Zahid (right) was fined RM800 for violating the MCO, while single mother B Lisa Christina was initially jailed for 30 days for a similar crime, but her sentence was reduced to a fine of RM1,000 on appeal.

PETALING JAYA: A single mother who was initially jailed for violating the Motion Control Order (MCO) questioned the court’s decision to fine only the daughter and son-in-law of former Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi RM800 for a similar crime.

B Lisa Christina, whose prison term was replaced with a RM1,000 fine on appeal, asked why there was a double standard when it came to punishment, noting that the fines of Nurul Hidayah Ahmad Zahid and Saiful Nizam Mohd Yusoff were more lower than yours.

“During the eight days in jail, I felt so broken because I couldn’t see my son and I was very embarrassed. I even had to borrow RM1,000 from my mother to pay the fine.

“Today, I read that Zahid’s daughter has just been fined RM800 for an even greater offense and was not given a prison sentence.

“Am I a second-class citizen in this nation? Why these double standards? I need an explanation for this, ”he said today in a Facebook post.

Lisa, who has a six-year-old son, was sent to Kajang Prison after pleading guilty to the charge to a magistrate in Petaling Jaya.

Living in a fifth-floor apartment, she had come downstairs to buy a package of drinks at a nearby store and stopped to chat with three others before returning home when the police caught her.

Her prison sentence was replaced by the fine after the judge noted that she was a criminal for the first time and had been in prison for eight days.

Those who do not comply with the Infectious Disease Control and Prevention Regulations (Measures within infected local areas) are subject to a maximum fine of 1,000 RM, imprisonment of up to six months, or both.

Earlier today, Nurul Hidayah and her husband were fined RM800 each after pleading guilty to violating the MCO.

The problem arose after Nurul posted photos of her and Saiful along with Deputy Environment Minister Ahmad Masrizal Muhammad and Prime Minister’s Department Minister Zulkifli Mohamad Al-Bakri on their Instagram account on April 20.

Deputy Attorney General Nur Ashikin Mokhtar noted that the crime had taken place in the third phase of the MCO, and urged the court to impose a deterrent sentence that would include a prison sentence.
