PETALING JAYA: The Ministry of Health registered 1,600 cases of Covid-19 and two deaths in the last 24 hours.
Chief Health Officer Dr. Noor Hisham Abdullah said there were 1,033 recoveries, bringing the total number of discharged to 62,306.
In a statement, Noor Hisham said the 1,600 cases bring the total number of infections in the country to 74,294.
Meanwhile, the two deaths bring the balance to 384.
There are 11,604 active cases, 129 of them in intensive care, of which 57 require respiratory assistance.
Negeri Sembilan recorded the highest number of cases today with 541, of which 521 were from existing clusters. A total of 500 cases are linked to the Bakti prison group. Negeri Sembilan’s cases accounted for 33.8% of today’s grand total.
Selangor had the second highest number of cases today with 426, of which 99 cases were from close contact examinations and 49 cases were group based. The vast majority of cases (276) were from other examinations. Selangor’s cases accounted for 26.6% of today’s global total.
Sabah had the third highest number of cases with 248. A total of 124 were from close contact screenings and 61 cases were linked to groups. Sabah cases accounted for 15.5% of today’s grand total.
Kuala Lumpur had 148 cases, with 70 linked to clusters, including 33 from the recently detected Bina Awan Lembah cluster of construction sites. Sixty cases were from other examinations while 18 were from close contact examinations.
Other states and federal territories with new cases reported today were Johor (98), Penang (55), Perak (54), Kedah (18), Labuan (five), Kelantan (three) and Sarawak (two), while Pahang and Melaka registered one case each.
Of today’s cases, 584 came from groups of prisons and temporary detention centers, most of which were from the Bakti group of prisons in Negeri Sembilan.
Regarding the two deaths, Noor Hisham said they were both 59 and 76-year-old Malaysians from Sabah. Both had a history of chronic illness.
Of the 1,600 current cases, only three were imported cases.
