Bangladeshi construction worker crushed to death by concrete slab in Simpang Ampat

BUTTERWORTH: A foreign construction worker was crushed to death while his colleague escaped with minor injuries after they were immobilized under a concrete slab in Simpang Ampat on Friday (December 4).

The victim, Bangladesh Md Shriful Islam, 33, was pronounced dead while being taken to Sungai Bakap Hospital.

However, his Indonesian colleague escaped with minor injuries.

The concrete pile is believed to have landed on the victims while they were working at the construction site in the incident that occurred around 10 a.m.

The spokesman for the State Fire and Rescue Department said that a team of firefighters from the Sungai Bakap fire station was deployed to the scene, after the department received the call from the public at 10.29 a.m. to inform them of the incident.

“When the firefighters arrived, the Indonesian citizen was already rescued by the public and taken to Sungai Bakap Hospital,” he said in a statement.

The spokesman said firefighters managed to rescue another victim, a Bangladeshi, at around 11 a.m., adding that the operation ended around 11.30 a.m.

The cause of the incident is still under investigation.
