PETALING JAYA: A police officer refused a RM 45,000 bribe from a businessman who wanted to get out of trouble during a raid on an entertainment center in Ulu Tiram, Johor on Tuesday.
Johor Police Chief Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay said the businessman had offered the money to the officer leading the raid in an attempt to evade actions being taken against him and 66 other people.
It was the second raid carried out on the premise, the first was on November 1.
“We suspect that the businessman has acted as an intermediary for the owners of the facilities around Johor by using the name of the head of the state police to obtain financial compensation,” Bernama quoted Ayob Khan.
Ayob also said that the 47-year-old suspect, who has since been turned over to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), had also used his name to carry out illegal activities at the facility.
The 66 people, comprising 46 men and 20 women and between the ages of 21 and 60, were each fined RM1,000 for failing to practice physical distancing.
Fifteen of them, including three women, tested positive for methamphetamine and ketamine.
Meanwhile, Johor MACC director Azmi Alias said the businessman was detained at the MACC office last night at 10.30pm to facilitate investigations.
As of today, the clerk of the Johor Bahru trial court had issued a five-day pre-trial order against him.
