PUTRAJAYA: Customs has settled the Goods and Services Tax (GST) refund claims for a value of RM4,006 billion, involving 40,280 claims from 27,426 companies for the period between June 22 and November 30, this year.

Its CEO, Datuk Seri Abdul Latif Abdul Kadir, said there were 82,517 GST refund claims worth RM1,316 million from 48,225 companies that could not be processed.

He said that among the problems the department faces in processing claims is due to the claimant not providing comments to present the required documents and submitting invalid bank information.

“This happened because the plaintiffs did not update their business registration information such as business address, phone number and email in the MyGST system, resulting in notices or information not reaching them,” he said today at a press conference here.

He advised companies that had not yet received their GST refund claims to update their registration information and banking information at the Taxpayer Access Point (TAP), MyGST.

They can also reach the department by email at [email protected], he said.

On June 15 this year, Finance Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz said that the GST refund would be made from June 22, 2020 and that payment to all claimants was expected to be completed in December 2020 at the latest.

Asked whether there were any false claims, Abdul Latif said the department would have to conduct an investigation and audit before classifying a claim as false.

“We cannot just say that there are companies that make false GST claims. An audit is needed, and if there is a basis, we will take steps to mislead the government, “he added.

In another development, Abdul Latif said that the two-day 94th Malaysia Customs Directors Meeting (MPPKSM) was held online starting today to comply with standard operating procedures (SOPs) established by the Council of National Security to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

“The main objective of this meeting is to discuss the policies of the department as well as to discuss the level of follow-up of the actions that have been carried out based on the policies introduced,” he added.Called
