KUALA LUMPUR: A Chinese national, believed to be the mastermind of an online gambling syndicate, was arrested during an operation on Mont Kiara.
Five other Chinese nationals and one Malaysian were also arrested in the raid last month.
The director of the Criminal Investigation Department, Huzir Mohamed, said that the alleged mastermind, Chen De Wei, was also being wanted by Chinese authorities for similar crimes in his home country.
Chen was arrested during a raid on Mont Kiara. It is believed that he brought people and opened online gambling centers here.
“They (Chen and the other six) are serving their 38-day detention under Section 4 (2) (a) of the Crime Prevention Act. Once his detention ends on January 8, we will decide on further actions against him, ”he said.
Huzir also said that businessmen Zaidi Kanapiah and Goh Leong Yeong, along with two police officers, received two-year arrest warrants from the Crime Prevention Board.
“They are serving in different detention centers in Simpang Renggam, Pokok Sena and Bentong now,” he said.
The four men had filed habaes corpus applications in the High Court to guarantee their freedom, but the court rejected their offer.
He said police had arrested 130 people for their alleged involvement in online gaming syndicates.
In another matter, Huzir said the police were seeking the help of the Thai government to bring three Thai nationals here for the shooting of General Operations Force (PGA) personnel.
Twenty-two people, including 21 Thais, have been arrested and in pre-trial detention.
Last week, PGA personnel Baharuddin Ramli was shot dead in a shootout with a group of smugglers some 600 meters from the TS9 checkpoint in Padang Besar, Perlis. His colleague, Norihan Tari, was injured.
