PUTRAJAYA (Bernama): Almost 3,500 officers from the Immigration Department had been tested for Covid-19 as of November 25, 3,000 of them in quarantine and 20 in treatment after testing positive.

Its CEO, Datuk Khairul Dzaimee Daud, said that immigration personnel on the front lines face the risk of being exposed to the virus because they are in close contact with foreigners and illegal immigrants, whose health conditions are unknown.

However, he said, the department maintained its commitment to implement the government’s foreign entry policy, decided through the National Security Council, which saw 1,332 positive imported cases detected as of November 30.

“Not only as the first guardians of the point of entry to the country to face foreign visitors who present the risk of carrying Covid-19, they are also directly involved in tasks related to the control and prevention of the pandemic,” he said in a statement in along with the celebration of Immigration Day 2020 on Tuesday (December 1).

He said that the department’s involvement can be seen in areas with many foreign nationals and foreign national quarantine and treatment centers, such as Malaysia’s Serdang Agro Exhibition Park, as well as enforcement operations in enhanced motion control order areas ( OLS).

He said that from January to November 30 this year, Immigration had conducted 6,379 enforcement operations across the country, which included inspections of 93,475 people and arrests of 34,920 illegal immigrants and 376 employers.

Along with the celebration, Khairul Dzaimee also launched Imigration’s 2020-2024 Anti-Corruption Plan, which focused on more transparent governance and making integrity a way of life, in performing his duty as an enforcer of the law.

To support the digitization initiative in government services and the implementation of new standards, he said the department had developed several systems, such as an online appointment system (STO) and an online consultation system (SPO).

He added that the department was always up-to-date with technology to ensure its delivery could be improved and operating costs reduced. – Bernama
