It’s time for a Perikatan presidential council, as not all party leaders are in the cabinet, says prime minister at Bersatu AGM

PETALING JAYA: It is time for Perikatan Nasional to establish a presidential council of all Perikatan party leaders and their allies, as not all party presidents are in the cabinet, says Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

Parti President Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia said that being in government as part of the Perikatan coalition gives the party the important role of working together with all other political parties, especially Umno and PAS, for the betterment of the people.

Muhyiddin said this while delivering his presidential address at the third annual Bersatu general meeting held virtually on Saturday (November 28).

He also said that policy should be about helping people who are suffering due to the Covid-19 pandemic and its effect on the economy, not about fighting for power or political position.

Muhyiddin also said that based on Perikatan’s victory in the recent Sabah state elections, he had decided that the Perikatan logo would be used in the upcoming general elections, which would only be held after the Covid-19 pandemic ended.

“The formation of Perikatan as a new political coalition is an important milestone in the country’s politics.

“Perikatan is a legacy and an important decision. Combine PAS and Bersatu and it will be a source of strength for Malays and Muslims.

“We also have Sabah STAR and SAPP representing the bumiputra and non-bumiputra in Sabah,” he said.

Muhyiddin also said that Perikatan is also weighing the other parties that want to be part of the alliance to turn it into a national coalition that represents everyone.

“We cannot remain alone, we need the other parties to face the elections and form a government.

“Alone, we can win seats, but it will not be enough to form a government,” Muhyiddin said.

He also said that the Perikatan logo would unite all of his candidates and that there would only be one Perikatan candidate at each seat.

“We were accepted by the Sabahans because we were the image of Perikatan as a functioning government with the welfare of the rakyat as its priority. I believe that in the next general election, Perikatan will be accepted by the whole country.

“You don’t need to talk politics when people are suffering from the pandemic and the bad economy,” Muhyiddin said.

He further said that Bersatu’s goal will be to remain as a party for all, continuing its efforts that had implemented the RM305bil stimulus packages and the largest budget as a government that cares for all races and religions.

The virtual AGM through FB Live linked Bersatu leaders and members gathered at 14 locations across the country, including hotels and state party headquarters.

The supreme council met in Kuala Lumpur.
