Suspension bridge cable in Ranau breaks, seven fall, two hospitalized

KOTA KINABALU: A cable from a suspension bridge in Ranau near here broke, causing seven people to fall, and two victims were hospitalized after suffering serious injuries.

They are believed to be among the eight people, including three students, who were trying to get a better network connection on the bridge at remote Kampung Gusi in Ranau when the cable broke.

Seven people fell off the bridge but one managed to hold on.

The first victim, 16 years old, fractured his femur while a 36 year old man injured his spine.

Ranau District Police Chief DSP Sammy Newton confirmed the incident and said no police report was filed, but that they learned of the incident after a message was distributed via WhatsApp on Thursday morning (26 of November).

He said they sent a team to the Ranau district hospital to speak with the victims.

“According to an initial investigation, the incident occurred around 9:30 pm on Tuesday (November 24) at night in the town located about 80 km from Ranau,” he said, adding that the suspension bridge was about 15 meters high. Tall.

“The cause of the incident is still under investigation, but we believe the bridge was in poor condition,” he said.

Ranau District Officer Mohd Yassin Ibrahim said he was told that one of the cables supporting the bridge broke, causing it to tip.

He said the road to the village was inaccessible due to flooded roads and the injured had to be taken to Kampung Karagasan by boat and then driven to the nearest clinic.

“The other (five victims) received outpatient treatment and were allowed to go home. Two were transferred to the district hospital, ”he said.

Yassin also said that officials and relevant authorities have been warned not to go to the village to assess the damage to the bridge due to the strong river currents caused by the rainy season.
