BUTTERWORTH: Three containers carrying more than RM1,000 worth of frozen buffalo meat from India were seized on Thursday (November 26) at the North Butterworth Container Terminal (NBCT).
Penang Malaysia Department of Inspection and Quarantine Services (Maqis) Director Zarina Ramli said enforcement agents found the shipment did not meet the import permit requirements.
“A total of 83,988 kg of frozen buffalo meat with an estimated value of RM1,000,749.09 has been seized for additional actions.
“Failure to comply with the conditions set forth in the Maqis import permit is an offense under Section 15 (1) of the Quarantine Services and Inspection Services Act 2011 and prosecuted under Section 15 (2) of the same Law.
“If convicted, offenders are subject to a fine of no more than RM100,000 or up to six years in jail, or both,” it said in a statement on Thursday (November 26).
He added that Maqis regularly inspects agricultural products at each entry into the country to ensure that plants, animals, carcasses, fish, agricultural products and microorganisms imported into the country are free of pests, diseases and contaminants, and at the same time, comply with government regulations. .
