KUALA LUMPUR: The Defense Ministry plans to reactivate the National Service Training Program (PLKN) to instill patriotism among young people.

Defense Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob (Photo) He said that the proposal to reactivate the program will be presented soon to the Cabinet.

“PLKN was abolished in 2018 by the Pakatan Harapan government.

“However, based on the benefits of this program to instill patriotism among young people, the ministry will propose its re-implementation to the Cabinet,” he said in his closing speech on Budget 2021 on Tuesday (November 24).

Ismail Sabri also said that the Public Services Department had offered “soft landing” contracts to 1,394 former officials of the National Service Training Department.

He said the officers were placed in various agencies and ministries for the period of one year beginning in 2019.

“These appointments were to give officers the means to support themselves before finding a new job,” he added.

PLKN was introduced in 2004. When it was shelved, the Pakatan government replaced it with a youth leadership program.
