PUTRAJAYA: The national conjugate pneumococcal vaccine (PCV) program will begin on December 1, says the Ministry of Health.

Health Director General Tan Sri Dr. Noor Hisham Abdullah (Photo) said that children born this year onwards (as of January 1, 2020) have the right to receive pneumococcal vaccine injections at the ministry’s health clinics.

“Parents should make appointments at the ministry’s health clinics to avoid congestion and ensure compliance with the new regulations as part of Covid-19 prevention efforts,” Dr. Noor Hisham said in a statement Tuesday ( November 24).

Dr Noor Hisham said the vaccines will be given in three doses, consisting of two starting doses at the age of four months and six months, followed by a booster dose at the age of 15 months.

He said that the pneumococcal vaccines that will be used during the first two years of the national program is the PCV-10 vaccine (Synflorix).

“The PCV-10 vaccine provides protection against 10 serotypes of pneumococcal bacteria, including serotypes 1,4, 5,6B, 7F, 9V, 14,18C, 19F and 23F.

“The vaccine also provides cross-reactivity protection against serotype 19A,” he said.
