KUALA LUMPUR: Cabinet is still discussing the deal to extend concession agreements with highway concessionaire PLUS Malaysia Bhd (PLUS), Deputy Public Works Minister Datuk Eddin Syazlee Shith al Dewan Rakyat said today.
He said the government was still looking for other options and will consider several issues with the goal of easing the burden on the government while balancing consumer needs.
He said the government will analyze the agreements in detail as they involve sensitive issues, including toll fees.
“At the same time, the financial burden of the government on these options would be considered, and the impact on the economy, the confidence of foreign investors and the general capacity of the government would also be taken into account,” he said to a question from Datuk Seri Mahdzir. . Mahdzir had asked for clarification on the Pakatan Harapan administration’s decision, announced in January, on the extension.
The PH government had accepted the PLUS extension, which led to an 18% reduction in toll rates.
He said the extension of the concession for 20 years was to ensure that PLUS can maintain and operate its highways without help from the government.
In January, several private companies had made proposals to acquire the highway concessionaire.
Khazanah Nasional Bhd owns a 51% stake in PLUS, while 49% is held by the Employee Provident Fund (EPF).
Eddin said both parties needed to review the toll revenue and that any decision made should not be a burden on the government and the people.
