“If a producing country experiences natural disasters such as droughts, floods and earthquakes or imposes economic sanctions, Malaysia will not be affected and there will be no interruptions in onion supply, although there could be a slight impact on prices,” he said in a statement today. .
Malaysia imports onions from 29 countries, five of which are the largest exporters: India (36%), Pakistan (23%), China (19%), the Netherlands (nine%) and Thailand (seven%). said.
The import of onions from India amounts to 149,539,411 kg of the total import and the large quantity, according to Nanta, was based on the choice and preference of the Malaysians.
Malaysia imports eight kinds of onions, namely, small red onion (India), large onion (India), red onion (China), small red onion (China), small red rose onion, small red onion (Myanmar), red onion Small (Thailand) and Big Yellow Onion (Holland).
Nanta said the Indian government imposed an export ban on all types of onions on September 14, except the Bangalore rose and Krishnapuram onions to meet domestic demand after the floods that hit the country last July.

“When demand exceeds supply, the price will increase. This is what happened with the onions from India, which has somehow affected the total supply of onions except for various types of onions like the onion from Holland, ”he said.
He said that the enforcement team of the Ministry of Internal Trade and Consumer Affairs would carry out constant checks and balances at all levels, including suppliers, wholesalers and retailers.
