Liverpool can send a strong message from the Premier League, and Jürgen Klopp knows it’s just the beginning

So this is what it feels like to wake up to a day when Liverpool have a great game. It’s been a while, but now the international rift is finally over.

It’s time to buckle up, because the Premier League journey is just beginning, and Liverpool need to make sure they stay focused and keep racking up points. Leicester City comes first tonight, and that’s not an easy place to start.

The two games against the Foxes last season were very different, to say the least. At Anfield it was a nervous encounter that could have gone either way, but at King Power Stadium Boxing Day was the day everyone in the country knew that nothing was going to stop Liverpool from winning the league.

Tonight’s game could send a similar message to the rest of the league, perhaps not as definitive as that night last December, but the overwhelming theme would be the same. That this Liverpool is still the best team in the country, and with good reason.

Yes, there have already been eight league games played by the Reds this season, but there have been two international breaks in that time. Now, many teams face a streak of at least two games a week between now and February, and possibly three or four different competitions by the time the new year rolls around.

Much of the talk before the game has been about the injury crisis at Anfield, and that’s understandable given the quality of the players who are not available. But Jürgen Klopp has never been a coach who takes pity on himself and is not going to start anytime soon.

Tonight’s game is the first of many that could easily be labeled the season-defining game, and it’s hard to argue that Liverpool need all three points to maintain their place at the top end of the league table. However, remember that there are 29 games after this tonight, there are still many points to play.

It’s about making it clear that you are still the best team in the country and setting the right tone for the congested match schedule that awaits you. They are more than just three points, yes, they are a welcome bonus, but it is what they represent that matters most at this stage of the season.

Given the number of injuries that seem to have flowed continuously over the last few weeks, if Liverpool were to pull off a resounding victory over Leicester tonight, it would send a great message to the rest of the league’s teams. That this team, as it always has been, has a strong mindset to deal with the most frustrating setbacks and still deliver a top-notch performance.

That’s what has made this Liverpool team what it is, and it’s the cornerstone of success that has led to four major trophies being added to the cabinet in the past two seasons. Raise the challenge, because Klopp and his players have what it takes to succeed, as they have many times before.

What I read on Liverpool.com

Dan has written a really interesting article about Joël Matip, how he found a strong connection with Naby Keïta and why that could be a source of success for Liverpool in the future.

There’s also an article from me and Dan looking at tonight’s game against Leicester, as we ponder the starting lineup Klopp could go with. How many changes does he make and what does he do with the players who are now injured?

What i am seeing

Klopp’s press conference is always an interesting watch, and this week’s was no difference. While he didn’t reveal too much in terms of team selection, he certainly had a lot to say about the injury situation at the club.
