Chong Keat Aun from Malaysia wins Best New Director award at Golden Horse Awards in Taiwan

Malaysian film talent made the country proud at the 57th Golden Horse Awards in Taipei, Taiwan last night.

Malaysian director Chong Keat Aun won the Best New Director award for his film The history of Southern Islet, a movie inspired by a real incident that occurred in the 1980s in Kedah’s Gunung Keriang.

The film, which was also nominated for Best Original Screenplay, is about a desperate wife who sets out on a journey to find a remedy for her husband, who fell ill after a fight with a neighbor. Along the way, he endures strange encounters and supernatural experiences.

The film stars Season Chee, Pearlly Chua, Jojo Goh, Mei-Sim Hoon, and Ling Tang, among others, and had previously won the Best Picture award at the Istanbul Film Awards in September.

Malaysian stylist Raymon Kuek was also honored for his makeup work on a Singaporean film. Number 1, which won the award for Best Makeup and Costume Design.

In accepting the award together with Singaporean film director Ong Kuo Sin, Kuek thanked the cast and crew of Number 1 and her parents for giving birth to a “short but talented man”, The times of the strait reported.
