The government says it is taking steps, including audits of phone subscribers, to verify cybercrime.

KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 1,377,862 prepaid lines have been found to have dubious registration data, Communications and Multimedia Minister Saifuddin Abdullah said.

Saifuddin said that 920,217 of these lines had been canceled, while 457,645 had been updated with valid information.

He said the Malaysian Multimedia and Communications Commission (MCMC) conducted data verification audits with the National Registry Department to verify the accuracy and validity of subscriber records.

“This is to prevent misuse by irresponsible fraud parties and the like,” he said during the oral question and answer session at Dewan Rakyat today.

Mohamad Alamin (BN-Kimanis) had asked about the ministry’s initiative to prevent the public from becoming a victim of cyber fraud through the use of inauthentic phone calls and apps.

Saifuddin said that the Police CyberCrime Committee-MCMC was empowered to take action to combat cybercrime, including fraud or scams.

“Cooperation and collaboration between the two parties, especially the exchange of information and experience, is vital to carry out law enforcement to address social media abuses more effectively,” he said.

At the same time, he said, the ministry, through the Information Department, had implemented a communication strategy through its official social media channels to ensure that people have access to authentic information on cyber fraud.

He said that CyberSecurity Malaysia had also helped tackle cyber fraud through awareness programs.

On the ministry’s action to tackle Macau’s fraudulent activities, Saifuddin said the government had launched the Malaysia Cybersecurity Strategy 2020-2024, with an allocation of RM 1.8 billion, to increase the country’s security readiness cybernetics.
