PUTRAJAYA: The Customs Department said it cannot process 82,517 requests for goods and services tax (GST) refunds totaling RM1.3 billion involving more than 48,000 businesses.
Customs Director General Abdul Latif Abdul Kadir said the companies have not provided the proper documents or correct banking information.
Latif said the 48,225 companies may not have updated their registration details such as address, phone numbers and emails in the MyGST system.
As a result, he said, they may not have received notifications or letters from the department.
“The Customs Department urges companies that have not yet received their GST refunds to update their registration details and banking information in the Taxpayer Access Point (TAP) in MyGST,” he said.
Latif said that companies requesting tax refunds can also email the Operations and Refunds Division at [email protected]
In June, the Finance Ministry said that GST reimbursement payments would be accelerated.
Finance Minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz said the Customs Department would employ the “pay first, audit later” approach for selected companies based on the Goods and Services Tax (Repeal) Act 2018 and also certain criteria .
“In this regard, I have instructed the department to expedite the reimbursement process that had been postponed due to the motion control order (MCO) and the conditional MCO during which the field audits could not be performed,” said Tengku Zafrul.
Latif said all payments were expected to be completed by December 31.
As of November 30, he said, the Customs Department had reimbursed RM4 billion to 27,426 companies.
