KUALA LUMPUR: A senior citizen riding his motorcycle fell and died after hitting a pothole near the Mid Valley Megamall here this morning.

The head of the Kuala Lumpur Traffic Control and Investigation Department, Zulkefly Yahya, identified him as 75-year-old Ho Yan Fee.

Initial investigations showed that he fell after his motorcycle hit a pothole in the Jalan Connaught road heading to the Mid Valley Megamall.

“His remains will be taken to the University Hospital Kebangsaan Malaysia for an autopsy,” he said in a statement.

Zulkefly said they classified Ho’s death under Section 41 (1) of the Highway Transportation Act, as causing the death by reckless or dangerous driving.

The prevalence of potholes has been the subject of much discussion in the media recently, after the Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Khairy Jamaluddin, fell and was injured when his bicycle hit a pothole in Banting, Selangor, the December 27.

The Department of Public Works (JKR) later apologized to Khairy and said they would take immediate action to repair the pothole.

However, social media users had criticized the department for “practicing double standards,” questioning whether they would have acted so quickly if it had not involved a VIP.

On December 31, the Shah Alam High Court allowed an appeal by a foreigner to claim RM48,700 for negligence against the government for injuries sustained after his motorcycle hit a pothole in Jalan Kuala Selangor six years ago.
