PETALING JAYA: An elderly man died and his wife was injured during a robbery at their home in Bukit Bandaraya in Kuala Lumpur.

In a statement, Brickfields Police Chief Anuar Omar said they were alerted to the robbery at a house in Jalan Mambu at 3.30 a.m.

Emergency services confirmed that the man, 71, had died. His 70-year-old wife was sent to the University of Malaya Medical Center for treatment.

Both victims were retired civil servants and it is understood that their attackers were two men armed with parangs.

“Forensic investigations at the crime scene indicated that the victims were attacked with a sharp object due to injuries sustained to various parts of their bodies,” Anuar said.

The case has been classified as murder under Section 302 of the Penal Code.

“The police are tracking and chasing the suspects involved.”

Anuar urged members of the public with information about the incident to call them at 03-22979222.

Kuala Lumpur CID Director Nik Ros Azhan Nik Ab Hamid later identified the victim as Wan Hassan Wan Embong, a former researcher at the Malaysian Institute for Agricultural Research and Development (Mardi).

He told Bernama that the incident occurred during a blackout in the area. He said the victim was believed to have been stabbed when he tried to fight off the intruders, who burst through the kitchen window of the two-story bungalow.

The couple’s daughter called the police after her mother informed her of the incident.

Nik Ros said the suspects fled with a wallet and laptop, among other things, but the true value of the belongings taken has not yet been established.

“Efforts to locate the suspects continue, even viewing CCTV footage of neighboring houses because the victims’ house did not have a closed circuit camera,” he added.
