71 new cases of Covid-19, 63 in Sabah

PETALING JAYA: The Ministry of Health reported 71 new cases of Covid-19 in the country today.

Of the new cases, 63 were detected in Sabah, 10 from the Laut group and 47 from the Bangau-Bangau group.

In a statement, Chief Health Officer Dr. Noor Hisham Abdullah said that no new deaths or clusters have been reported in the past 24 hours.

The new infections bring the total number of cases to 10,576, while the death toll remains at 133.

He said there were 69 local infections involving 43 Malaysians and 26 foreigners. The remaining two infections were imported cases, both foreign.

There are currently 777 active cases, six in the intensive care unit (ICU) and two requiring respiratory assistance.

With the new cases detected in Laut’s group, the group’s number of infections now stands at 22 cases, all related to Filipinos.

“As of noon today, a total of 488 individuals have been tested from this group,” said Noor Hisham, adding that 144 individuals were still awaiting the results.

Meanwhile, the total number of cases for the Bangau-Bangau cluster has risen to 60, of which 45 are still awaiting test results.

He also said that the Benteng Lahad Datu group registered a new infection, bringing the total number of cases in the group to 730. Of the 10,521 people tested, 1,245 in Tawau and 509 in Lahad Datu are still awaiting their results.

In Kedah, four new cases were detected in Sungai’s group, bringing the infection count to 91.

He added that two new cases were also identified in Selangor, both of which had traveled to Semporna, Sabah.

Noor Hisham said that the infection rate, known as “R null” or “R0” ⁠, from Covid-19 in Malaysia was steadily increasing since September 7.

“Following the situation of increasing Covid-19 cases in Sabah and Kedah, the R0 in both states has greatly impacted the national R0. R0 is unstable and rising. On September 23, it rose again to 1.34 “.

He reminded voters in Sabah that they must comply with SOPs for the upcoming state elections to curb the spread of the virus.
