MELAKA: A pet dog bit a girl, causing the seven-day-old girl to lose her right hand.
Melaka CID chief Asst Comm Mohd Nor Yhazid Idris said the incident happened at a house in Bachang here on Tuesday (September 8).
He said that in the 10 a.m. incident, the girl’s aunt took her out to get some sunlight after the baby had developed jaundice.
“The girl was in her crib placed near the front grill of the house,” he said on Friday (September 11), adding that the girl was the couple’s first child.
ACP Mohd Nor said the aunt later went back inside to make arrangements to bathe the baby.
“However, he heard the baby cry and saw the dog brutally attacking the child,” he said.
He said the aunt panicked and started screaming for help.
At the time, the boy’s father was upstairs attending to his wife, who was still in prison.
“The baby, who was covered in a pool of blood, was rushed to a private hospital before being referred to Melaka Hospital.
“The boy was later referred to Kuala Lumpur Hospital and is still in critical condition,” he said.
He added that the case would be investigated under article 31 (1) (a) of the Children’s Act 2001.
ACP Mohd Nor said the canine that attacked the baby was a Plott Hound, a large breed said to have originally been bred to hunt bears.
