All seven were at a project site when diesel was said to have seeped into the ground and flowed into Sungai Muda.

SUNGAI PETANI: Seven people, including two contractors and a site supervisor, were arrested in connection with an oil spill that caused water supplies to be disrupted in Sik and Kuala Muda after three water treatment plants had to be shut down.

The seven, aged between 27 and 38, were arrested yesterday for allegedly having committed mischief that led to a decrease in water supply in the incident on Thursday.

Kuala Muda District Police Chief, ACP, Adzli Abu Shah, said four Indonesian workers and one Malaysian were among those detained for six days from today.

He said the preliminary investigation found that the contamination occurred due to the installation of a riser pipe at the project site about 100 meters from the Jeniang water treatment plant.

Three barrels containing diesel were found at the site, for use by an excavator and a generator, he said.

He said there were traces of diesel on the ground and it was believed to have flowed down a drain before entering Sungai Muda.

On Thursday, Syarikat Air Darul Aman (SADA) CEO Mohd Suhaimi Mohd Jusoh said water supplies to 34,200 households in Sik and Kuala Muda were disrupted when water treatment plants in Jeniang Baru, Jeniang Lama and Sungai Pau were forced to temporarily shut down.
